Equestrian Statue of Queen Wilhelmina
Rokin, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Queen of the Netherlands for almost 60 years, Wilhelmina was a hero to many Dutch people because of her role in the Resistance during World War II. The bronze Equestrian Statue of Queen Wilhemina on the Rokin commemorates her as a young woman, sitting side-saddle on a trotting horse, wearing a practical hat and long skirts that cover her feet.
The basics
While it seems to hail from an earlier era, the statue has stood on the Rokin since 1972, 10 years after Wilhelmina’s death. The Dutch sculptor Theresia van der Pant created it based on conversations with the Queen’s daughter, extensive studies of horses in motion, and depictions of Wilhelmina when she was young. An architect designed the surprisingly modern-looking pedestal, which is broader at the top than the base. Along with admiring the statue, many people find it a convenient landmark for meeting up with friends on the Rokin.
Things to know before you go
Wilhelmina was Queen of the Netherlands from 1890 to 1948—ruling for the longest of any monarch in Dutch history.
The sculpture will have particular appeal for royalists and those interested in World War II.
There are no access challenges when approaching the statue.
How to get there
The Equestrian Statue of Queen Wilhelmina stands at the junction of the Rokin and Langebrugsteeg in the heart of Amsterdam, about a 15-minute walk south of Amsterdam Central Station. It’s right by Rokin metro station (Line 52); you can also catch the #4, #14, or #24 tram.
When to get there
The Rokin can get extremely busy on the weekends, particularly during the summer high season. For sightseeing purposes, it’s better to visit midweek.
Exploring the royal Netherlands
Like the United Kingdom, the Netherlands have a constitutional monarchy, but two of their palaces are open to visitors. The splendid 17th-century Royal Palace Amsterdam on Dam Square reveals its grand rooms when it’s not hosting state receptions. Out in the countryside, the Paleis Het Loo, where Queen Wilhelmina died, sits amid gorgeous formal 18th-century gardens and is built on a truly impressive scale.
