Entoto Maryam Church
Tulu Lench'a, Ethiopia, 3QQ7+RF9
Situated on Mount Entoto in the northern outskirts of Addis Ababa, the octagonal Entoto Maryam Church is one of the most important churches in Ethiopia. The colorful building was commissioned in the 19th century by Menelik II and is today the resting place of the monarch and his wife, Empress Taytu.
The basics
While the stone church is the main draw for pilgrims, there's also a small museum on-site that displays some of Taytu and Menelik's personal effects, including royal regalia. Tours give you the chance to check out both parts of the complex, as well as the former palace. Note that you may only be able to see the church from the outside, depending on when you visit. The church is a popular stop on tours of Addis, many of which also visit Entoto Natural Park nearby. Some day tours to the Debre Libanos monastery also stop at the church.
Things to know before you go
- Women should wear a headscarf inside out of respect for local customs.
- The church is not wheelchair accessible.
- Photography is prohibited inside the church and museum.
How to get there
Entoto Maryam Church is located north of Addis Ababa, about 20-30 minutes by car from most parts of the city. It's located north of Entoto Natural Park and the two attractions are frequently visited in conjunction, either independently or with tours. Joining a tour that includes transportation is the easiest way to get to the church, or you can take a local taxi.
When to get there
Entoto Maryam Church is always open, but most people visit during the day. If you come on a weekend or a religious holiday, mass or other services may be taking place—the church is often closed to visitors when there’s no service taking place, although you’re always welcome to view it from the outside. Visit during the dry season, from October to May, for the most pleasant weather.
Royal Sights in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa is full of great spots to visit for travelers interested in learning about Ethiopia’s regal past. The Holy Trinity Church is an absolute must, which contains the tomb of the country’s last emperor—Haile Selassie—and his wife Menen Asfaw, while the IES Ethnographic Museum is housed in Selassie's former palace and showcases his decadent imperial bedrooms.
