Endau-Rompin National Park

Malaysia’s Endau-Rompin National Park is a swath of ancient rainforest in southern Peninsular Malaysia. It contains many waterfalls and is home to wildlife, such as Malayan tigers and the largest remaining population of endangered Sumatran rhinoceros. It’s also home to one of Malaysia’s indigenous groups, the Orang Asli people.
The basics
Named after the Endau and Rompin rivers that run through it, this national park offers rugged natural landscapes and plentiful wildlife spotting. Hike along rainforest trails, go river tubing, take a night safari on foot or by 4WD, meet the local Orang Asli people, and visit the waterfalls and lakes. Because you’ll need a 4WD vehicle to navigate the park’s rough roads, most travelers visit on tours from either Kuala Lumpur or Johor Bahru, or by arranging transport at the Park Headquarters at Kahang.
Things to know before you go
Accommodation is available in chalets at the Park Headquarters, and there are also a few campsites.
Bring insect repellent, a raincoat or umbrella, a flashlight, walking shoes, and socks to prevent leeches.
There are three entrances to the park. Peta is most convenient if you’re coming from Kuala Lumpur, while Mersing is best combined with a trip to Tioman Island. Selai is closest to the park’s waterfalls, tigers, and elephants.
How to get there
Each of the park’s three entrances require a different route and mode of transport. The Peta entrance has the most developed infrastructure and is best suited to travelers. The park is about five hours’ drive from Kuala Lumpur, and three hours from Johor Bahru. To get to the Peta entrance by bus, take an express bus to Kluang and then a local bus to Kahang. By train, take the train from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru and get off at Bekok. From there, take the local bus to Kahang.
When to get there
The park is open between April and October, but is closed during the monsoon season (November to March). You can visit during the day and at night—night safaris are one of the activities offered in the park.

Northeast of Kuala Lumpur, the Taman Negara National Park also contains some of the world’s oldest rainforests, like Endau-Rompin. It’s more commonly visited too, and easily accessible from Kuala Lumpur, so you don’t need to prepare for such a rugged experience here.
