The basics

Whether sightseeing in the city or enjoying a walking tour of Trier’s UNESCO-listed Roman ruins, the Electoral Palace deserves a spot on your itinerary. Visiting with a guide is a good idea to dive deeper into the palace’s long history and appreciate its mish-mash of architectural styles.

Some elements, such as the grand rococo staircase in the south wing, are off-limits. But you can still admire the fanciful pink and cream façade and stroll around the landscaped gardens, which are dotted with ornate fountains and sculptures. The grounds are also home to the Trier Archeological Museum (Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier), the Roman-era Basilica of Constantine (Konstantin-Basilika), and the ancient Roman Baths (Kaiserthermen).

Things to know before you go

• Look out for seasonal concerts held on the palace grounds or the Grand Chamber of the south wing, which give you a rare opportunity to peek inside the palace.

• There are public restrooms and a café located in the gardens.

• There is no admission fee to visit the gardens or the Basilica of Constantine.

• The gardens are mostly accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

The Electoral Palace is on Willy-Brandt-Platz, just southeast of downtown Trier. It’s a less-than 10-minute walk from the central Hauptmarkt or a 10-minute walk from Trier train station.

When to get there

The Palace Gardens are open to the public year-round, but they are most attractive in late spring and summer when the flowerbeds are in full bloom and the fountains are flowing. Whenever you visit, you’ll be at the mercy of the weather, so pick a clear, dry day and dress accordingly.

Exploring Trier’s ancient Roman ruins

First settled in the late 4th century BC, Trier is considered Germany’s oldest city and boasts several UNESCO World Heritage-listed Roman ruins. Two of the most significant sit on the Electoral Palace complex; the Roman Imperial Baths and the grand Basilica of Constantine, which still holds church services today. Other notable ruins are the Porta Nigra city gate, the 20,000-seat Roman Amphitheater, and the Forum Baths, which are now a museum.
