El Paso Scenic Drive

2467 Scenic Drive, El Paso, TX, 79930

El Paso’s Scenic Drive offers the best views of the city—at least, from the confines of a car. This winding road along the Franklin Mountains is a favorite for sunset drives, with a panoramic overlook providing photo-worthy vibes. Perfect for a peaceful escape, it’s a must-visit for gorgeous landscapes and a unique perspective on El Paso’s desert beauty.

The basics

Cut into the cliffside, the Scenic Drive snakes for a quick 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) to the overlook, where the horizon extends across the Rio Grande and neighboring Juarez, Mexico. There’s also a small park at this spot, so visitors can get out, stretch their legs, and stay awhile to soak in the views. It’s beautiful day or night, and since it’s just north of downtown, there’s no reason to miss it.

Things to know before you go

  • The overlook is paved and accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

  • Benches and trash cans are on-site. There are no restrooms.

  • Bring a quarter to use one of the viewfinders for a magnified look over the city.

How to get there

To reach El Paso's Scenic Drive, take I-10 west from downtown, exit at Schuster Avenue, and follow the signs to Rim Road. The uphill drive begins near the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), and the panoramic overlook offers parking for a leisurely stop. You could also walk, bike, or nab a rideshare.

When to get there

If you’re a hiker or biker, the best time to visit is Sunday morning, when the overlook is closed to motor vehicles. Other than that, sunrise, sunset, and late into the evening when the city is glowing are great times to visit.

For more fabulous views

El Paso has its fair share of scenic beauty, and the city’s Scenic Drive is just one way to experience it. For more adventure, and even more rugged desert views, hop on an ATV tour around the sagebrush mountains. To top it off, the area also has red sand dunes to explore.
