Dunfermline Abbey and Palace

St Margaret’s Street, Dunfermline, Scotland, KY12 7PE

Walk in the footsteps of royalty at Dunfermline Abbey and Palace. Some of Scotland's greatest kings and queens have been laid to rest in the abbey, including Robert the Bruce. Founded as a priory in the 11th century, the ruins of the abbey still boast an impressive Romanesque nave, one of the finest examples of its kind in Scotland.

The basics

The abbey complex encompasses the ruins of a palace built by King James VI in the 16th century, the birthplace of Charles I, the last monarch born in Scotland. The site is taken care of by both Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and the Abbey Church of Dunfermline. HES operates the Abbey Nave and Palace, while the church is responsible for Robert the Bruce’s tomb—visiting hours vary slightly, so check their respective websites beforehand.

Dunfermline Abbey and Palace is a typical stop on history-focused tours departing from Edinburgh. Visiting with a tour guide can help bring the site’s history to life.

Things to know before you go

  • Admission to the abbey and palace is free, although booking in advance is recommended.

  • All pathways on the grounds are wheelchair accessible, but some parts of the palace and gatehouse are unsuitable for wheelchair users.

  • Due to funerals, weddings, and other events, the church may be closed at short notice.

How to get there

Dunfermline Abbey sits at the heart of Dunfermline, Scotland’s ancient capital, 30 minutes drive from the center of Edinburgh. There is no visitor parking directly at the site, but on-street parking is just a short stroll from the entrance to the abbey nave. The site is a 10-minute walk from Dunfermline City train station, which has regular connections to Edinburgh.

When to get there

Dunfermline Abbey and Palace are open year-round. Opening hours vary but are typically from mid-morning until late afternoon, with a 1-hour break for lunch. During the low-season months (October to March), the site is closed on Sundays and Mondays. The Abbey Church of Dunfermline is open for morning worship every Sunday.

Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum

Just a short stroll from Dunfermline Abbey and Palace, the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace and Museum celebrates the Scotsman who went from humble beginnings to one of the world’s wealthiest men and a generous philanthropist. The Memorial Hall adjoining the humble cottage where he was born tells the story of Carnegie’s life and lasting legacy.
