POINT OF INTEREST

Dom Tower

Domplein 9, Utrecht, Netherlands, 3512

Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, stands high above the rooftops of Utrecht. This icon of Utrecht has watched over the city for nearly 700 years, delighting visitors with its unparalleled views, Gothic architecture, and its chorus of bells. Visitors to the city won’t find a better place to get the lay of the land.

The basics

To visit the Dom Tower, you’ll need to join a 60-minute guided tour, which is offered in either Dutch and English. As you climb the tower’s 465 stairs, you’ll learn about the tower, its history, and its bells, before enjoying views of Utrecht at the top. People often combine visiting the Dom Tower with DOMunder, which further explores the rich history of Utrecht. Also close by is St Martin's Cathedral and the cloister gardens of Pandhof van de Dom.

Things to know before you go

  • The Dom Tower is only accessible by 465 stairs and is not wheelchair accessible or suitable for anyone who may struggle with the climb.

  • Restroom facilities are located on the tower’s ground floor.

  • It’s best to book tickets for the tower in advance to choose your preferred visiting time.

  • Special tours for kids and tours that combine the tower and DOMunder are only available in Dutch.

How to get there

The Dom Tower is in the heart of Utrecht’s Old Town on Domplein, one of the city’s main squares. You can walk to the tower in under 10 minutes from most parts of the Old Town, or take the 2 bus from Utrecht Central Station.

When to get there

Tours of the Dom Tower take place daily during business hours, except on certain holidays. Special evening tours are offered during July and August. Those wishing to hear the tower’s bells in full action should visit on the weekend—you can hear the carillon playing on Saturday morning and the tower’s swinging bells rung by hand on Sunday.

Highlights of the Dom Tower Tour

Taking a tour of the Dom Tower isn’t just a straight march to the top. First, you’ll be brought to a candlelit chamber on a lower floor to learn about the tower. Higher up you’ll stop at the bells and at the room where the tower’s carillonneur performs each Saturday. At the top is where you’ll enjoy city views—on a clear day, you can even see Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
