POINT OF INTEREST

Devon House

26 Hope Road, Kingston

The 19th-century Devon House is a Georgian-style home once owned by George Stiebel, Jamaica’s first black millionaire. Rooms furnished with Caribbean antiques still retain original features; highlights include an English chandelier in the ballroom. Located in Kingston, the 11-acre (4-hectare) estate now has shops, art boutiques, and cafés.

The Devon House, though well-preserved, is now a buzzing lifestyle hub. Original stables and kitchen have been repurposed to host more than two dozen shops and cafés, making Devon House a National Monument that you can revisit. The tour lasts 30 minutes, but you can spend hours admiring the gardens on a leisurely stroll.

Most visitors stop at the Devon House during historical tours of Kingston. With the Bob Marley Museum, and Hope Zoo and Botanical Gardens close by, a guided tour or a private car service helps you see the best of Kingston conveniently. You’ll hear Devon House’s name throughout your time in Kingston, though not about the mansion itself. The name lends itself to the Devon House Bakery and Devon House I Scream parlor, located on the mansion grounds and throughout the island.

  • There are over two dozen flavors of handmade ice cream available to sample.

  • You’ll find reproductions of the estate’s French and Jamaican antiques for sale in the shops.

  • Admission includes a free item from one of the eateries on-site.

The Devon House is located at 26 Hope Road in Kingston, almost a mile (1.2 kilometers) west of the Bob Marley Museum. Its central location makes it easy to access no matter if you’re driving a rental car, hailing a cab, or walking from other attractions. The Devon House bus stop serves eight different route lines (including 24Ex, 75, and 75Ax) if you prefer cheap, efficient public transportation.

You won’t need much more than an hour to experience the estate. An early morning tour is perfect to beat the crowds and keep your itinerary on schedule. If you want to explore at your leisure, come in the late-afternoon to take the full tour and enjoy the rest of the estate. The restaurants and shops each set their own hours at Devon House, with the property and South Lawn opening from morning until early evening.

To truly pamper yourself in this historic mansion, take advantage of the special Chef’s Table experience: a private lunch or dinner in the Devon House dining room. A 3-course meal with wine is included, offering you an opportunity to sit and savor not only delicious local foods, but also the ornate 19th-century furnishings and antiques displayed in this preserved space.
