The Detroit Public Library adjoins the Wayne State University Campus. It’s often pointed out on historical walking tours, and the library also hosts free monthly art and architecture tours (register in advance). The building, designed by Cass Gilbert and partially funded by Andrew Carnegie, attracts visitors with its beautiful Italian Renaissance facade, as well as its murals and mosaics. Meanwhile, researchers are drawn to the Burton Historical Collection, particularly to delve into the history of Detroit and surrounding regions; most days the collection is available by appointment only.
