Delhi Old Fort (Purana Qila)

Mathura Road, New Delhi, Delhi, 110003

Construction of the red sandstone Old Fort (Purana Qila), Delhi's oldest surviving fort, was begun in the middle of the 16th century under Sher Shah of the Sur Empire. The fort was later the location of Dinpanah, built by rival Mughal Emperor Humayun and destroyed by Sher Shah. Purana Qila’s location may also have been the site of the ancient city of Indraprastha.

The Basics

Legend has it that Shah wasn't able to finish Purana Qila, so Humayun completed construction of the fort, only to die here later by falling and cracking his skull. It's a fascinating place to explore, with elements of both Lodi and Mughal design including intricate carvings and inlay. Going with a guide can make the experience more educational still, as there’s lots of history to learn about and hidden spots to discover.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Purana Qila is a must-visit for history lovers.

  • Wear sun protection and comfortable shoes, as much of the attraction is exposed and on uneven terrain.

  • The use of video recording equipment costs extra.

How to Get There

Purana Qila is located on the eastern edge of Central Delhi, about a 15-minute drive from Connaught Place or 10 minutes by car from India Gate. It's easy to get to by car or auto rickshaw, but travelers relying on public transportation will have to take the metro to Khan Market (on the Violet Line) and then walk 20 minutes.

When to Get There

Purana Qila is open from Tuesday through Sunday from sunrise to sunset, though it's generally best visited earlier in the day when temperatures are lower. Sound and light shows are held here in the winter months (November through January), every day except Friday. Hindi shows are from 6pm to 7pm, while English-language shows run from 7:30pm to 8:30pm.

The Sher Mandal

One of the highlights of a visit to Purana Qila is the chance to check out the Sher Mandal, a two-story octagonal tower that was originally built as an observatory and library, though travelers can only observe it from the outside. It was here that Humayun fell down the stairs and cracked his skull; he succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
