Dauphin Street
Mobile, AL
Colorful Dauphin Street is one of Mobile’s oldest and best-known thoroughfares. Lined with historic buildings that house numerous bars and restaurants, it’s one of the city’s most popular spots for a night out.
Dauphin Street’s 16 blocks all lie within the Lower Dauphin Street Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Home to preserved buildings that showcase a variety of architectural styles, including federal, Italianate, and Victorian, Dauphin Street is a charming setting for a leisurely stroll and for popping in and out of the many shops, bars, and restaurants that line the street. Walking tours of Mobile, including food tours, typically visit Dauphin Street.
Leave the car: the best way to explore Dauphin Street is on foot.
Look out for Downtown Ambassadors, wearing purple and gold uniforms, who can provide tips and assistance.
At the eastern end of Dauphin Street, Bienville Square is a serene spot to relax under a canopy of oak trees.
Dauphin Street is located in the heart of Downtown Mobile. It’s within a short strolling distance of attractions including the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, History Museum of Mobile, and Mobile Carnival Museum, and a 10-minute drive north of Mobile International Airport. Street parking is available, both free and metered.
Dauphin Street is generally liveliest in the evening. LoDa ArtWalk is one of Mobile’s most popular events and takes place every second Friday of the month, during which Dauphin Street becomes pedestrianized and local art galleries, institutions, studios, and unique shops stay open late, and live performers entertain visitors.
Mobile is known for hosting the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, and Dauphin Street is at the center of many of the season’s festivities. If you can’t visit during Mardis Gras season, you can instead immerse yourself in the culture at the nearby Mobile Carnival Museum, which displays costumes, masks, and other Mardis Gras ephemera.
