Cukurcuma Hamami
Çukur Cuma Cd.43, Istanbul, Turkey, 34425
For almost 200 years, Cukurcuma Hamami has brought Turkish-style wellness to Istanbul’s elite, counting esteemed guests such as the great poet Constantinos Kavafis of Alexandria among its patrons. After a lavish 10-year renovation, the hamam reopened in 2018, providing a tranquil spot to relax and unwind at the heart of the busy Beyoğlu neighborhood.
The basics
Both locals and travelers come to Cukurcuma Hamami to experience a traditional Turkish hammam. The hammam starts with a steam room, followed by a soapy body scrub and wash and an optional massage. The hammam offers a variety of packages, including 30- or 40-minute hammam treatments, exfoliating hand and foot treatments, full-body oil massages, foot massages, and face masks. All treatments end in the lounge area, where herbal teas, water, and dried fruits are served.
Things to know before you go
Cukurcuma Hamami is a mixed hammam where men and women share the treatment areas.
All guests are given a towel, soap, shampoo and conditioner, scrub mitt, and slippers. Single-use bikinis or shorts are also available, or you can wear your own swimsuit.
The hamman is suitable for children over 12 and adults of all ages. However, it’s not recommended for pregnant women or those with certain medical conditions—check with your doctor if you’re unsure.
How to get there
Cukurcuma Hamami is centrally located in the Beyoğlu neighborhood of Istanbul, and it’s about a 10-minute walk from Taksim Square. The closest tram stops are Ağa Camii and Galatasaray Lisesi, both along the busy Istiklal Caddesi shopping street.
When to get there
The hammam is open daily from morning through late evening, and advance bookings are highly recommended. Peak hours are typically 5pm–8pm, and weekends are often busier—visit outside of those hours if you prefer a quieter experience. Make sure to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment.
Taksim Square and around
From festive celebrations and street parades to political demonstrations, anything happening in Istanbul likely occurs around Taksim Square (Taksim Meydani). The cultural epicenter and transport hub of modern Istanbul, Taksim Square is home to the Republic Monument, Taksim Mosque, and a bustling flower market. After exploring the square, continue down the pedestrianized Istiklal Caddes (Istiklal Caddesi) to browse the many shops, take your pick of restaurants, or ride the historic tram into Galata.
