POINT OF INTEREST

Copacabana Fort (Forte de Copacabana)

Praça Coronel Eugênio Franco 1, Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil, 22070-020

Perched on the edge of Copacabana Beach, the World War I–era Copacabana Fort provides a glimpse into Brazil's military past. Guests can see Krupp cannons, the Army History Museum, and centuries-old artillery displays. With its panoramic views and immersive exhibits, this often-overlooked attraction helps tell the story of the region.

The basics

At Copacabana Fort, you’ll learn about the Copacabana Fort revolt of 1922, as well as the broader scope of Brazil's military history. You can also see the artillery collection and capture social media-worthy photos of Copacabana Beach.

The fort can easily be explored independently, but people with a keen interest in military history, as well as travelers interested in lesser-known sights, may consider adding the tour to a custom itinerary of Rio de Janeiro. While in the area, be sure to stop by the Pedra do Arpoador lookout point, Garota de Ipanema Park, and the renowned surfing spot, Praia do Arpoador.

Things to know before you go

  • Many areas of the fort are wheelchair and stroller accessible, though some spots may have uneven surfaces.

  • The fort is a short walk away from the Carlos Drummond de Andrade Statue, which depicts a life-size version of the famed Brazilian poet.

  • Much of the fort is outside, so bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from sun exposure.

How to get there

To reach Copacabana Fort, take the bus to the Joaquim Nabuco or Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana Proximo Ao stop, then take a short walk to the fort. You can also book a sightseeing tour that includes round-trip transportation.

When to get there

Plan your visit to the fort in the early morning or late afternoon to beat the crowds and midday heat. For outstanding photos of the sun setting over Guanabara Bay, head to the lookout points about 30 minutes before sunset. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast, as the highlights of the fort are all outdoors.

Cannons and cakes

Sweeten your historical visit with a slice of classic Brazilian cuisine. In addition to its seaside views and cultural significance, the grounds of the Copacabana Fort also boast a Confeitaria Colombo. While the original 130-year-old confectionery is situated in the city center, the fort location offers the same delectable treats and charming ambiance.
