POINT OF INTEREST

Colonial Michilimackinac

800 N Huron Ave, Mackinaw City, MI

While most of early America’s wartime sites are in the east, the 18th-century Colonial Michilimackinac in Michigan is the exception. Some 240 years ago, this lakeside spot was an 18th-century fort and fur trading village embroiled in war. Largely restored to its original blueprint, Colonial Michilimackinac is now an open-air museum, where you’ll learn how the American Revolution affected the western US.

Colonial Michilimackinac isn’t just a reproduced tourist attraction—it’s one of the most extensively excavated early colonial French archaeological sites in the United States. Archaeologists are still on-site in summer when you can watch them digging up history. Of course, the main attraction is what archaeologists have already found. Across 16 buildings, explore the recreated fort as it was in 1781. Costumed guides playing British soldiers, indigenous leaders, and French-Canadian merchants, run regular tours that bring 18th-century Michigan to life.

  • The park conducts immersive programs such as cooking classes and trade exhibitions. Check the calendar to see what’s running during your visit.

  • The park has restrooms, a small souvenir shop, a shop selling snacks and drinks, and grounds for picnicking).

  • Motorized and manual wheelchairs are available to borrow on a first-come first-served basis.

  • You need an admission ticket for the park; book in advance to avoid disappointment on the day.

Colonial Michilimackinac is at the tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, surrounded by the Straits of Mackinac, so you’ll need a car to get here. Mackinaw City was built around the fort and has less than 1,000 residents so rideshare services are unavailable. If you’re staying in Mackinaw City, the fort is within walking distance of downtown.

The park’s hours vary greatly by season, with extended hours in summer. The park has great views of the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge, so visit early in the morning for warmer light and great photos.

If someone in your party is a real history buff (or just likes it when things go boom), you can contact the park and reserve a spot to fire a real cannon. Fire the brass cannon at 9:30am, which opens the park, or wait until the park closes and fire all four of the fort’s defense weapons. Inquire with the park to learn more.
