Club Hipico
Avenida Almirante Blanco Encalada 2540, Santiago de Chile, Metropolitan, 8370465
Santiago's Club HÃpico is the most famous of the city’s horse race tracks. Dating back to 1870, it's Chile’s oldest racetrack and home to South America's oldest, and most prestigious, stakes race, the Clásico El Ensayo, making it the best place to see thoroughbred horse racing in the Chilean capital.
The basics
One of Chile’s three main racetracks (the other two being Hipódromo Chile and ValparaÃso Sporting Club), Club HÃpico is known for its elegant surroundings, which include formal gardens, fountains, ponds, and views toward the Andes mountains. Race days here are long by international standards, typically with around 18 races per card. The arena, offering seating for more than 30,000 people, also plays host to live concerts; previous acts have included Metallica and Depeche Mode.
Even if you’re not planning to attend a race, visitors to Santiago can get a look at the famed track, and possibly some horses in training, while on a sightseeing tour of the capital.
Things to know before you go
Only men pay admission to Club HÃpico. Women, children, and the elderly enter for free.
There are a number of restaurants located around the track, open only on race days.
Club HÃpico has a barbecue area where, for a fee, visitors can grill.
Winning gamblers can collect a successful ticket at any racetrack in the country or Teletrak agency.
How to get there
Club HÃpico is located at Avenida Blanco Encalada 2540, next to Parque O’Higgins. The closest metro station is Parque O'Higgins, which is on Line 2 of the Santiago Metro and a 20-minute walk away. A number of buses stop right outside the track, including route number 119 from the city center.
When to get there
Races are typically held on Mondays and Fridays, as well as the occasional Sunday. You should check the website beforehand to confirm the race calendar. The Clásico El Ensayo, Chile’s most important horse race, typically takes place in late October or early November.
Parque O’Higgins
Next to Club HÃpico, Parque O’Higgins (O’Higgins Park) is Santiago’s second-largest public park. It’s home to the Fantasilandia amusement park and Movistar Arena stadium, as well as two serene gardens, a public pool, skate park, soccer field, theater, tennis courts, and walking trails that cross its length. On September 18, locals gather here to celebrate the national independence celebrations of Fiestas Patrias.
