Chilean National Library (Biblioteca Nacional de Chile)
Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins 651, Santiago de Chile, Metropolitan
Dating back to 1925, the Chilean National Library (Biblioteca Nacional de Chile) is notable both for its massive collection of books and its gorgeous French neoclassical design. It's spread out over two floors and features beautiful marble interiors and elegant sculptures among the seemingly endless collection of tomes.
The basics
The Chilean National Library is open to visitors, and it’s worth heading inside to see the interiors alone. The library is included on a number of city tours of Santiago, from half- and full-day sightseeing tours to pre- or post-cruise visits for travelers coming from nearby ports. Most tours just visit the building's exterior, so if you want to spend time inside, it's best to visit independently or join a private, customizable tour.
Things to know before you go
If you're visiting Chile, you won't be able to check out books, but overseas residents are welcome to sign up for a library card.
You can arrange to view the special collections by emailing the library in advance.
The library is wheelchair accessible, with an accessible entrance on La Alameda (Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins Avenue).
How to get there
The Chilean National Library is in the heart of the city, right on La Alameda, a main thoroughfare that runs through Santiago. It's across the street from the Santa LucÃa station on Line 1 of the Santiago Metro, Bus numbers 210, 345, 403, 513, 518, and F30n stop right by the library.
When to get there
The library is open on weekdays during the day, and closes an hour early on Fridays. It generally remains closed during public holidays, but it’s a good idea to check with your guide or with the library directly for up-to-date information.
Santa LucÃa Hill (Cerro Santa LucÃa)
The library is right by one of downtown Santiago's most popular sights: Santa LucÃa Hill (Cerro Santa LucÃa), a small hillside park with an ornate plaza and fountain. This hill offers great views to those who are willing to climb the 200 steps that lead to the Torre Mirador at the top.
