Chatuchak Market

There's much to explore at the enormous Chatuchak Market, which covers 35 acres (14 hectares) and has upwards of 15,000 stalls across 27-plus sections. Join the hundreds of thousands of visitors who shop each weekend. Browse an enormous variety of Thai and Southeast Asian goods, sample Thai food, get a foot massage, and visit curio shops. Depending on your interest, you might spend an hour or a day. Join a tour to navigate with ease.

• Most stalls only take cash. There are a few ATMs, but better to come cash in hand.

• Wear light and comfortable clothing as most shops are not air conditioned.

• A few shops have fixed prices, but at most bargaining is expected. Keep bargaining friendly and respectful.

• Take precautions against pickpockets: Don’t carry all of your money in the same place, and avoid putting money in the front pocket of a bag worn on your back.

• Pick up a free map to navigate the market, which is divided into numbered sections according to the type of goods for sale.

The Chatuchak Market is north of central Bangkok, quite far from other popular visitor attractions. If traveling independently, the best way to arrive is via the Skytrain (BTS) to Mo Chit station, or the subway (MRT) to Chatuchak Park station. From both stations, follow the signs—and the crowds—to the market, a short walk away. Or, join a guided tour, which may include transport.

The market operates on Saturdays and Sundays, from roughly 9am until 6pm. It's especially busy in the afternoons, so come earlier in the morning for a more comfortable experience.

If the crowds at the market get to be too much, retreat to a park. Immediately to the north of the Chatuchak Market are the connected Queen Sikrit, Rod Fai, and Wachirabenchatat parks. Within these are the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium and the Children’s Discovery Museum. Consider getting food from the market packed to go and having a picnic in the park.
