Changi Beach Park
Nicoll Drive, Singapore, 498991
Perched on Singapore’s northeast coast, Changi Beach Park is one of the nation’s oldest coastal parks. Despite the planes that roar overhead, it maintains a tranquil feel. Besides plane-spotting, locals come to run, cycle, roller-skate, kayak, fish, and eat barbecue, or enjoy views of Ubin Island (Pulau Ubin) from the western end.
The basics
A dark history lurks behind the tranquility of the pale, gently sloping beaches. Japanese soldiers murdered Chinese civilians on Changi Beach during the World War II Sook Ching operation. Some tours of Singapore’s World War II history stop at the plaque commemorating the massacre.
Changi Beach Park is on the Round Island Route, which currently links 45 miles (75 kilometers) of eastern Singapore’s coastline and is popular with cyclists. Although the waters look calm, currents can be strong, so swimming is not recommended.
Things to know before you go
Changi Beach Park will be of most interest to history buffs.
The park offers showers, bathrooms, and lockers.
Changi Beach Park has paved paths and parking accessible for people who use wheelchairs. But there’s no wheelchair access to the sand.
How to get there
Changi Beach Park runs between Changi Ferry Terminal and Changi Point on the northeastern coast of Singapore. Public transit options include the 89 bus from Pasir Ris MRT (East West Line) and the number 9 bus from Tampines East MRT (Downtown Line). Or you can rideshare, cycle, or take a taxi.
When to get there
Changi Beach Park is one of Singapore’s quieter coastal parks, and it’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with lights from 7pm until 7am. The park’s western end offers striking sunsets, with views across to Ubin Island (Pulau Ubin).
Singapore’s best beaches
Compact and urbanized, Singapore isn’t known for beaches, but there are plenty of places to have fun in the sun. Lazarus Island, linked by a bridge to St. John’s Island, is uninhabited, with pretty and often deserted beaches. On Sentosa Island, Singapore’s capital of fun, Siloso Beach offers beach clubs and water sports, while Tanjong Beach is postcard-perfect. The mainland East Coast Park offers 10 miles (15 kilometers) of coast, ideal for cyclists and runners alike.
