Cemberlitas Hamami
Vezirhan Rd. 8, Fatih/İstanbul, Turkey, 34440
Conjure an image of a classic Turkish bath and you probably think of something like Istanbul’s Cemberlitas Hamami. Built in 1584, the bathhouse is still pampering patrons today, and its structure sets it apart; lying on a heated marble slab looking up at the pinholes of light filtering from the dome above must be one of Istanbul’s top experiences.
The basics
Turkey has turned bathing into an art form, and central Istanbul’s Cemberlitas Hamami is one of the most artistic of all. Though the service here can be a little rushed, what it may lack in personal attention is made up for in the beauty and atmosphere of the building. And while it may not look like much from the outside, inside you’ll be transported back to the Ottoman Empire—when your eyes adjust to the swirling clouds of steam, that is.
Travelers typically visit the baths independently to relax in their own time. The Grand Bazaar is right next door and Sultanahmet Mosque and Hagia Sophia are just down the road, so it’s easy to fit a bath into your sightseeing plans.
Things to know before you go
The men’s and women’s sections of the baths are completely separate, with same-gender attendants, too.
Store your personal items in lockers in the changing rooms.
Different packages are available at the baths, from 15-minute traditional soap massages to other 30-minute massages.
Be prepared to get (semi)naked in front of others of your gender. The massages are provided in the main bathing hall, and although you’ll be given a loincloth, a certain amount of nudity is unavoidable.
Reservations are not required for individual visitors.
How to get there
Cemberlitas Hamami is in the heart of Istanbul, near many other must-see attractions including the Grand Bazaar, which is just next door. The Cemberlitas tram stop on the T1 line is right outside the baths.
When to get there
The baths are open every day (including holidays) from early morning until late at night. Visit to relax after an active day of sightseeing, or to warm up when visiting Istanbul in the winter. Mornings are usually less busy than afternoons and evenings.
Other hammams in Istanbul
Cemberlitas Hamami isn’t the only Turkish bath in Istanbul by a long shot. There are around 60 still in operation. Other top choices are the Hurrem Sultan Hammam in Sultanahmet, Ali Pasha Hamami in Karakoy, Cukurcuma Hamami in Cukurcuma, and Cinili Hamam in Uskudar. Each has its own unique atmosphere, architectural style, and history.
