Catedral Metropolitana de Florianopolis
Florianopolis, South Brazil
While the mustard-yellow exterior of the 17th-century Catedral Metropolitana de Florianopolis is an attraction in itself, the religious structure is known for its collection of sacred art inside, too. One of its most famous pieces is the Flight of Egypt sculpture by Tyrolean artist Demetz Groeden, a hand-carved depiction of Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus.
The basics
Highlights within the Catedral Metropolitana de Florianopolis include an early 20th-century German pipe organ, elaborate stained glass windows, a marble nave and altar, and a carillon with five bells. The cathedral is a popular feature of walking tours of the Florianopolis Historic Center, which typically combine it with Praça XV de Novembro, with its towering palms, and the Centennial Fig Tree, a symbol of the city.
Things to know before you go
- The cathedral is an active place of worship, so dress appropriately and keep noise to a minimum.
- While entry is free, donations are appreciated.
- Ramps mean that the cathedral is wheelchair-accessible.
