Castle of Púbol (Gala Dalí Castle)

The southernmost part of the Dalí Triangle (completed by the Dalí Theater-Museum in Figueres and the Salvador Dalí House in Cadaqués), the Castle of Púbol (Gala Dalí Castle) was a gift from artist Salvador Dali to his muse and wife, Gala. Their former home is now her final resting place—a surrealist Gothic and Renaissance building surrounded by shaded gardens and quirky fountains, and open for the public to explore.
The basics
The mustachioed artist ranks among Catalonia's most famous former residents, and as such, many visitors to Barcelona set out on guided day trips to the three corners of the Dali Triangle, including the Gala Dalí Castle in Costa Brava. Those who visit independently can choose a basic entrance ticket or admission and a guided tour in English.
Things to know before you go
Whether you call it Castell Gala-Dalí Púbol or Castillo Gala-Dalí de Púbol, Púbol Castle is a must-visit for art lovers.
The museum offers a free left-luggage service.
Most of the rooms within the castle are wheelchair accessible, except Gala’s bathroom, the crypt, and the "Les Gales de Gala" exhibition.
Flash photography and the use of tripods are not permitted within the museum.
How to get there
The Castle of Púbol is set 78 miles (125 kilometers) northeast of Barcelona. Since it isn’t very well connected by public transit, the most convenient way to visit is on a guided tour with included round-trip transportation. Those who wish to visit independently can catch a bus from Girona or Palafrugell to Cruilla de la Pera and walk to the museum from the stop on the C66. It’s also possible to take the train from Girona to Flaca and catch a taxi from the station to the museum. Travelers with a car will find free parking at the entrance to Púbol village.
When to get there
Since the Castle of Púbol sees fewer visitors than its more popular counterpart in Figueres, crowds are rarely a problem. The museum is typically open from mid-morning to early evening, but stays open later from mid-June to mid-September. Note that the museum closes entirely from mid-January to mid-March.
Touring the Dalí Triangle
While it’s possible to see all three points of the Dalí Triangle in a single day, it makes for one very long day, and you may feel rushed at each of the three attractions. For the best experience, take two days to explore the Triangle, or if you’re pressed for time, choose a tour that visits two of the three—typically the museum in Figueres and either Púbol Castle or the Salvador Dalí House in Cadaqués.
