POINT OF INTEREST

Castello Brown

Via alla Penisola, 13, Portofino, Italy, 16034

Serving up some of the most memorable views of the colorful village below, Castello Brown tops the list of Portofino’s panoramic perches. This medieval castle was converted to a lavish private residence in the 19th century and today is a popular venue for VIP weddings and star-studded events. Take the 10-minute walk uphill to the landmark for sky-high vistas over Portofino’s bay.

The basics

Admire Castello Brown from the sea during a boat tour along the Portofino Peninsula, or visit by land as part of a walking tour of this chic resort town. As you walk up to the hilltop site from the center of Portofino, you can also take in the Church of San Giorgio; the scenic Portofino lighthouse (Faro di Portofino) sits just beyond the castle along the same walking path. Highlights of the castle include its neo-Gothic interiors, grand tiled staircase, and gardens overlooking the town and coast.

Things to know before you go

  • It’s a short but steep walk from Portofino to Castello Brown, so wear comfortable shoes and sun protection.

  • The castle is often closed for private events, so check with the tourist office in central Portofino before setting off to confirm that the property is open.

  • Top up your smartphone battery before visiting, so you can snap plenty of pictures.

  • There is an admission fee to enter the castle and grounds.

  • The hilltop position and historic architecture of the structure make it inaccessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

Climb the stairs marked “Salita San Giorgio” from the Portofino harbor up past the Chruch of San Giorgio, and you’ll reach the castle in about 10 minutes. The nearest train station to Portofino is in Santa Margherita Ligure; from there, buses connect to Portofino in about 15 minutes.

When to get there

Castello Brown often hosts private events and ceremonies, so opening hours can be unpredictable. Confirm that the castle is open by contacting the castle directly or asking at Portofino’s tourist office in the town center. Visit in the morning or late afternoon for the best light to take photos.

Where to find the best views in Portofino

Liven up your social media and capture souvenir shots while visiting Portofino from one of the town’s many scenic overlooks. Castello Brown is hard to match, but you can also take in pretty views of the town center from the Church of San Giorgio on the way to the castle, or continue on to the panoramic lighthouse overlooking the Portofino Peninsula farther along the walking route.
