Castello Aragonese
Ischia, Italy, 80077
The medieval Castello Aragonese, perched atop its own islet just off the coast of Ischia, is one of the most important and striking attractions on the island. Visit this sprawling fortress, working your way up from the bottom—past historic churches and convents, a cemetery, prison, and terraced gardens—until reaching the panoramic Terrazza degli Ulivi overlook at the very top.
The basics
The headliner of most Ischia tours by land or sea, the Castello Aragonese is a must-see for anyone visiting the island. Its churches and convents attract architecture buffs, while history enthusiasts enjoy learning about the castle’s past in the crypt and prisons. The scenic terrace at the upper reaches of the fortress offers one of the most dazzling views on Ischia, overlooking its coastline and the turquoise waters of the Bay of Naples.
Things to know before you go
The only way to cover this expansive fortress is on foot, and much of the complex is outdoors. Wear comfortable shoes and protect yourself against the island sun.
This semi-ruined castle offers an atmospheric backdrop for kids to explore, and they can roam indoor and outdoor spaces without traffic dangers.
Two cafés inside the castle offer light dishes and drinks with sweeping sea and coastal views.
The castle is partially accessible via elevators, but most of the visitor route has steep stretches and steps and is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
How to get there
The Castello Aragonese is in Ischia Ponte, and can only be reached by taking a pedestrian walkway that connects Ischia’s mainland to the castle islet. Take a taxi or bus number 7 from the island’s main port of Ischia Porto, or join an island tour with transportation that includes a stop at the castle.
When to get there
The Castello Aragonese is open daily, but much of the grounds are open-air, so the best time to visit is in the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is more forgiving. The last entry time, 1 hour before sunset, changes seasonally, so check the exact closing time in advance by emailing the ticket office.
Top things to see inside the Castello Aragonese
There are more than a dozen points of interest inside the massive castle complex, so you may want to focus on the highlights to optimize your time. Linger in the Church of the Immaculate Conception to admire its 18th-century stuccoes and visit the St. Mary of Consolation convent to take in the cloister, nuns’ cemetery, and scenic overlook. Other top attractions include the frescoed crypt of the 14th-century Cathedral of the Assumption, the stark cells of the former Bourbon prison, and the sky-high Terrazza degli Ulivi (Terrace of the Olive Trees).
