POINT OF INTEREST

Casa de Campo

Paseo de la Puerta del Ángel 1, Madrid, Spain, 28011

Casa de Campo is Madrid’s 4,250-acre (1,722-hectare green lung, an urban park that originated as hunting grounds for the Spanish Royal Family and is now a favorite weekend picnic destination for Madrileño families. Centered on a vast boating lake, this sprawling green oasis is a haven for walkers, joggers, cyclists, and skaters.

The basics

Casa de Campo ranks among Madrid’s most popular green spaces, and it’s home to several attractions, including an amusement park, a zoo, and the repurposed Madrid Arena (formerly a bullring). The terrace of the restaurant at the Casa de Campo cable car station affords panoramic views over Madrid. Many electric bike tours and running tours of Madrid pass through the park, but if you’d like a closer look, opt for a private or small-group Segway tour focused on the park grounds. For a comprehensive overview of the Spanish capital, combine an e-bike tour with a ride on the cable car and a tapas tour around the San Miguel and La Cebada markets.

Things to know before you go

  • Park admission is free, but some attractions charge a separate fee.
  • Don’t forget your camera, as the park has some of the best views of Madrid.
  • The park is vast and best explored on foot; wear comfortable walking shoes.

How to get there

The park is located at Avenida de Portugal. Casa de Campo is linked by the Teleférico de Madrid cable car to the Paseo del Pintor Rosales; the cabins travel at a height of 130 feet (40 meters) above Madrid and the journey takes 10 minutes. You can also access the park by taking Metro Line 5 to Casa de Campo or Line 10 to Lago.

When to get there

The park is open daily throughout the year from morning to sundown. Plan to visit on a weekday, as the park fills up with nearly half a million people each weekend. Free classical and rock concerts are held in the park in summer.

Madrid’s Best Parks

Visitors looking for a breath of fresh air have several parks and green spaces to choose from in Madrid. Stroll through the Royal Botanical Garden (Real Jardín Botánico) to see its collection of some 90,000 plants, or row a boat on a lake at Retiro Park (Parque de el Retiro). Oeste Park (Parque del Oeste) is known for its evergreen trees and English-inspired design, while Capricho Park (Parque de El Capricho)—another former royal retreat—boasts a mix of Greek, Italian, French, and English architectural features.
