POINT OF INTEREST

Bomas of Kenya

Nairobi

Located about 6 miles (10 kilometers) south of downtown Nairobi in Langata, just outside Nairobi National Park, the Bomas of Kenya cultural village recreates and preserves Kenya’s traditional heritages. The village offers the chance to see reconstructed villages, watch traditional performances, check out arts and handicrafts, and try regional cuisines from all over East Africa.

The village offers daily cultural performances in a 1500-seater multipurpose auditorium doubling as a conference center and wedding venue. Independent visitors can watch traditional music and dance shows featuring instruments from across Kenya and high-energy acrobatics. The cultural homesteads section showcases thatched houses and other characteristic dwellings. Full-day sightseeing tours of Nairobi can stop at the cultural village while making the rounds, while half-day experiences provide round-trip transportation.

  • If there is a particular dance you’d like to see—for example, from Samburu or Masaai warriors—check the schedule ahead of time.
  • The on-site gallery features a mix of wooden stools, food and drink containers, and other ceremonial artifacts.
  • An onsite restaurant features culinary favorites from around the region, including Gikuyu potatoes and Abagusii plantains.

The Bomas of Kenya is located 20 minutes south of central Nairobi by car, near Nairobi National Park. If coming with a guided tour, you'll likely also visit nearby attractions such as the Karen Blixen Museum and the Sheldrick Elephant Nursery. Public transportation is limited and not recommended.

While the Bomas of Kenya is open year-round, you're best off planning a visit outside the rainy seasons, from July to October and from January to February. The cultural homesteads can be visited daily from morning to evening. Performances take place every afternoon, including weekends and public holidays. Check up-to-date opening hours before planning your visit.

Nairobi’s only wildlife reserve, Nairobi National Park is inside the city and is home to lions, giraffes, leopards, wildebeests, and endangered black rhinos. While most visitors ride through the park on self-guided safaris, various walking trails and picnic areas make day-trips a breeze. The National Park is open year-round and easy to visit along with the Bomas of Kenya and other wildlife-related attractions.
