POINT OF INTEREST

Bockenheimer Warte

Frankfurt, Germany, 60325

Public transit hubs are not often tourist destinations in their own right—but Bockenheimer Warte isn’t your average station. Famous for its surrealist entrance—designed to look like a tram car crashed straight into the pavement—the 1986 station is located west of Frankfurt’s city center and is a must-visit for design and architecture fans.

The basics

A primarily residential neighborhood northwest of central Frankfurt, Bockenheim was put on the map for many international visitors in 1986 when its delightfully quirky subway entrance—inspired by René Magritte’s surrealist artworks—was installed. Bockenheimer Warte is a busy U-Bahn interchange, and while commuters and locals generally frequent it, the station is also worth going out of your way if it’s a playful photoshoot you’re after. (It helps that the surrounding neighborhood also boasts some hip bars, restaurants, and a historical monument or two.)

Things to know before you go

  • Bockenheimer Warte is a busy station—be mindful of locals and commuters when stopping to take photos.

  • Because the station entrance is open to the elements, visiting on a good-weather day is advised to make the most of it.

  • If you plan to use the U-Bahn at Bockenheimer Warte, you can purchase tickets at machines within the station or use the RMV app.

How to get there

Bockenheimer Warte is located in Frankfurt’s Bockenheim district, some 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from the city center. If traveling from central Frankfurt, the easiest way to reach the station is by taking the U4, U6, or U7 lines, which all serve the station. From the Hauptbahnhof (Central Station), it’s just a 15-minute journey.

When to get there

Frankfurt’s U-Bahn (Underground) network runs 21 hours a day, from early morning until late at night. If you want to take in the highlights of the Bockenheimer Warte entrance, aim for typical daylight hours—just note that the station, which links three different U-Bahn lines, will be bustling on weekdays during morning and evening commuter hours.

What to do in Bockenheim

Though not on Frankfurt’s typical tourist track, the Bockenheim district offers a good dose of local life. If it’s historical landmarks you’re after, head to Bockenheim’s watchtower, which is instantly recognizable for its medieval turret. The surrounding area hosts a lively market on Thursdays, and a selection of international restaurants, hip bars, and cafes serve the local student population.
