Bezesteni Market
Dionisiou Solomou 20, Thessaloniki, Greece, 54624
Tucked away in the inner city streets of Thessaloniki, the Bezesteni Market is one of the city’s finest Ottoman landmarks. This covered market with its domed roof has stood here since the 15th century, and while it’s a little quieter than it probably was centuries ago, it’s still home to shops selling fabrics, flowers, and jewelry, waiting for tourists keen on window shopping.
The basics
Some travelers come to this small market since it’s one of Thessaloniki’s last Ottoman sites, visiting on their own or as part of a walking tour, while others pass by when heading to the nearby Kapani Market on a local food tour. Most will only stop for a photo or to browse the market shops, but if you have a little time, head upstairs to the exhibition space, home to art shows and cultural events.
Things to know before you go
The market is a good stop for those interested in history and architecture.
If you’re shopping, the main items are jewelry, textiles, and handicrafts.
Access inside may be difficult for visitors with wheelchairs or strollers.
For markets with food, head to the Kapani Market or Agora Modiano.
How to get there
In the city center of Thessaloniki, you can walk to Bezesteni Market from Aristotelous Square. Take one of the many city bus routes that stop at the square or, even better, ride the #23, #24, or #58 bus to the Agora stop directly outside the market.
When to get there
People visiting the Bezesteni Market to admire its historic building can come at any time of day or night, but to browse its shops or catch any exhibition taking place inside, you’ll need to visit during business hours when the shops are open. Arriving in the late morning is usually the best option, as you can then head to the Kapani Market around lunchtime.
Exploring the Thessaloniki markets
After a stop at the Bezesteni Market, check out other destinations to shop and eat in the area. Kapani Market is Thessaloniki’s main bustling market, lined with butchers and home to all sorts of food, produce, and artisanal goods for sale. One block away, there’s the elegant and modern Agora Modiano, full of trendy eateries and an upstairs dining hall.
