Bern Bridge

Pont de Berne, Fribourg, Switzerland, 1700

The postcard-perfect Bern Bridge (or Pont de Berne/Bernbrücke) is the last remaining covered bridge in Fribourg and a must-see when exploring the old town. Dating back to the 17th century, it spans the Sarine/Saane River and features views of the nearby Zaehringen and Gottéron bridges, as well as the medieval historic center. Admire its weathered beams and colorful flower boxes as you walk, cycle, or drive across.

The basics

Pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers all share the Bern Bridge, which runs 130 feet (40 meters) across. A highlight of tours of Fribourg’s old town, a visit to the bridge is generally included along with other top sights such as the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, medieval town walls and fortifications, Espace Jean Tinguely – Niki de Saint Phalle, and the scenic funicular. Join a private or small-group tour or visit the bridge and nearby sights on your own with an audio tour. You can also pair your city tour with an excursion to nearby Gruyères.

Things to know before you go

  • The bridge is free to visit, one of the many budget-friendly attractions in Fribourg’s old town.

  • Since bikes and vehicles all cross this small bridge, be mindful of traffic when you walk across.

  • Charge your camera and phone to snap photos of the bridge and the views from its span.

  • Access to the bridge is flat and paved, easy to navigate with a wheelchair or stroller.

How to get there

Bern Bridge is within easy walking distance of the top sights in the city’s compact old town, and there’s a large parking lot just north of the bridge; if you’re driving, you can leave your car there and walk across for better views. For extra convenience, visit the bridge with a walking, cycling, or driving tour.

When to get there

Visit by day for the best views of the bridge and surrounding medieval cityscape; the bridge is covered, so can be enjoyed in all weather. Traffic gets busy during the midday hours, so time your tour for the early morning or late afternoon to cross the bridge in relative peace.

The bridges of the Sarine/Saane River

The Sarine/Saane is spanned by more than a few fairy-tale bridges that will delight everyone from photographers to families. Visit the covered Pont du Châtelet near Gruyères, Broc’s old stone bridge of Broc, and the elegant railroad bridge in Grandfey. You can also venture into the forested slopes to find the Lessoc Bridge along the historic footpath linking the village of Lessoc to Montbovon. This 17th-century gem is the most complete and well-preserved wooden covered bridge in the canton of Fribourg.
