Barrio Logan
San Diego, CA, 92113
An artistic neighborhood with Mexican roots, Barrio Logan in San Diego is home to former warehouses that have now been turned into galleries, taco shops, and craft breweries. Its centerpiece, Chicano Park, boasts nearly 100 murals depicting the community’s activism efforts, alongside images of notable figures like Frida Kahlo. The area is known for its culinary arts as well—specifically homestyle Mexican food.
The basics
During your visit to San Diego, be sure to include Barrio Logan on your itinerary and combine it with a stop in Little Italy, the Gaslamp Quarter, or the waterfront—or check it out before attending a show at the Rady Shell or catching a game at Petco Park. While you can explore the neighborhood on your own, consider booking a guided tour that covers the murals and artwork to get a better understanding of the neighborhood’s Mexican influences. Foodie and cultural tours of San Diego also usually include a stop in Barrio Logan.
Things to know before you go
- Visit on the second Saturday of any month for the Barrio Art Crawl, a free self-guided tour with stops at murals, galleries, studios, and local businesses.
- With a menu focused entirely on tacos, tamales, and rice and beans with chorizo, Las Cuatro Milpas on Logan Avenue is worth waiting in the long lines. Just remember to bring cash.
- As with all urban parks, use common sense when visiting Chicano Park after dark.
How to get there
Located along San Diego’s waterfront, Barrio Logan is across the bay from Coronado Island. It’s accessible via rideshare services and the Metropolitan Transit System Trolley (Blue Line). Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, is found just outside the neighborhood’s boundaries, making it a convenient stop to grab food before a game.
When to get there
Chicano Park is the site of many cultural celebrations throughout the year, including Chicano Park Day every April. This popular festival celebrates Mexican culture, both traditional and contemporary, with everything from folk dancing shows to lowrider cars on display. Keep in mind that not all galleries in Barrio Logan are open every day, so be sure to check their websites for information and operating hours.
Things to do and see in Chicano Park
Chicano Park is the geographical and cultural heart of Barrio Logan. The public park, located beneath the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, is known for its colorful murals and is dotted with sculptures, gardens, picnic tables, and playgrounds. Designated a National Historic Landmark, the park hosts an annual celebration of the local community and is home to the Chicano Park Museum, which functions as a community center.
