POINT OF INTEREST

Baños Colinas

Colina, Metropolitan

High in the Andean foothills, at a lung-testing 8,200 feet (2,500 meters), travelers can sink into the thermal springs of Baños Colina that are naturally heated by the San José volcano. The waters have a high mineral content—and are believed to have healing qualities—promising soothed skin after an alpine soak with a view.

The basics

Nine outdoor thermal pools are set along stepped terraces formed by the calcium deposits left by the thermal water. The temperature in the pools varies between 77°F (25°C) in the lowest pools up to 131°F (55°C) in the highest. You can visit Baños Colina on an organized tour from Santiago, which typically includes hotel pickup and lunch, or as part of a larger trekking tour of the Andes. Some glacier hiking tours of El Morado Glacier also include a visit to the pools.

Things to know before you go

  • There is an admission fee for Baños Colina. Once you have your ticket, you can stay for up to 24 hours.
  • Facilities are limited, but there is a changing room and basic restrooms. Bring everything you need (including food and plenty of water).
  • If you would like to spend the night, you can camp at Baños Colina.
  • The thermal pools are not wheelchair accessible.

How to get there

Baños Colina is around a 2.5-hour drive from the center of Santiago. If driving, it’s advisable to have a car with high clearance, as the dirt road leading to the resort is not maintained. If you don’t have your own transport, opt for a tour from Santiago.

When to get there

The thermal pools are open year-round, but the best time to visit is between October and March when it’s warmer—heavy snow can prohibit access during winter. As the hot springs are near Santiago, they can get busy during the weekends and holidays. If you want to avoid the crowds, it’s best to choose a weekday.

Hiking options

Before or after bathing in Baños Colina, visitors can go hiking in the Andes. Particularly popular is the easy trail to a panoramic viewpoint of San José volcano. Serious walkers can continue farther to the highest peaks and ridgelines—book a tour and explore in the company of a guide who is familiar with the area.
