Baiguate Waterfall (Salto de Baiguate)
Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic, 41000
In the Jarabacoa interior—surrounded by lush trees and natural beauty—you'll find the Dominican Republic's Baiguate Waterfall (Salto de Baiguate), one of three much-visited falls that play a large role in the country's ecotourism. Set in a picturesque canyon popular with hikers, rafters, and adventurous souls who rappel down the waterfall, this is a popular stop-off on excursions from nearby Jarabacoa.
The Basics
Easily reached via a canyon trail, suspension bridges, and a set of wooden steps, Baiguate cascades into a deep, cold pool of jade-colored water. Full-day tours to Baiguate typically include stops at the area’s other two cascades—Jimenoa Falls 1 and 2—and some canyon tours include a rappel down the Baiguate. The area around Baiguate Waterfall is also a hub of outdoor adventure, where travelers come to take advantage of white-water rafting tours, hiking adventures, horseback riding, and more.
Things to Know Before You Go
Baiguate Waterfall is a must for first-time visitors to the Jarabacoa area.
Check weather conditions before heading out to the falls, and always wear comfortable shoes with good grip.
The waterfall can be ascended via a ladder and steps; however, extreme caution should be taken.
Baiguate is not accessible to wheelchair users.
How to Get There
Baiguate Waterfall is located about a 10-minute drive from the mountain resort town of Jarabacoa and a roughly 3-hour drive south of Puerto Plata proper. There's a parking area near the falls, which you can reach via a short hike down an adjoining path.
When to Get There
Beat the crowds by visiting earlier in the day. Weekends tend to be busier with travelers and locals alike. Across the Dominican Republic, you can expect stormier weather and cooler water temperatures from June to November, with rainfall typically peaking in October.
Other Natural Attractions in the Dominican Republic
If waterfalls aren't your thing, consider a trip to Saona Island instead—the epitome of paradaisical, visitors can expect white sand, turquoise seas, and swaying palms. Alternatively, pay a visit to the 3 Eyes National Park, the ideal place for jungle hikes, or stop by Los Haitises National Park for the chance to spot local birds, flora, and other fauna in the Dominican Republic.
