Avenyn (Kungsportsavenyn)

The basics

Gothenburg’s most famous street is a staple of sightseeing tours. Start your walk at Götaplatsen square, home to the City Library and Gothenburg Concert Hall. Pose for photos by the gigantic Poseidon statue or browse the exhibitions at the Gothenburg Museum of Art, before following the boulevard north. Leave yourself plenty of time to browse the shops and stop for fika (Sweden’s traditional coffee break) at one of the many cafés along the way. Continue all the way to the Rosenlund Canal at the northern end, where you’ll find the Neo-Renaissance Stora Theatre and the Kungsportbron bridge, from where boat tours set out along the city’s canal ways.

Things to know before you go

• Party-loving travelers will also want to head to Avenyn; some of the city’s best nightlife is located on and around the central boulevard.
• The best way to explore Avenyn is on foot, but Gothenburg hop-on hop-off bus tours also drive the full length of the street.
• Although there are some sections with flat cobblestones, the wide sidewalks of Avenyn make access easy for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

Avenyn runs through the center of Gothenburg, from the banks of the Rosenlund Canal to Götaplatsen. Trams run along the boulevard, stopping at Kungsportsplatsen at the north end, and Valand, mid-way along. Buses 18 and 52 stop on Götaplatsen at the south end.

When to get there

Avenyn is always full of life, whether you’re joining the throngs of shoppers on a Saturday afternoon or sipping cocktails by the streetside on a summer evening. It’s particularly atmospheric during summer events such as the Gothenburg Culture Festival and the West Pride parade, while the holiday season sees it glittering with illuminations.

Drinking and Dining along Avenyn

Many of Gothenburg’s coolest bars, restaurants, and nightlife venues are located along Avenyn. Enjoy a drink by the canalside at Storköket, before watching a show at the Stora Theatre; look out along Avenyn from the rooftop Bar Himmel at the Gothenburg Museum of Art; or tuck into award-winning Swedish cuisine at SK Mat & Människor. For late-night drinking and dancing, popular haunts include Lounge, Push, Yaki-Da, and Park Lane.
