Australian Sports Museum
Melbourne Cricket Ground, Brunton Avenue, East Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, 3002
Head to the Australian Sports Museum inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for all things Aussie sport. Learn about Aussie Rules Football, cricket, tennis, horse racing, and more. Australian sports heroes are brought to life using holograms and displays, which is fun for the entire family, sports enthusiast or not. You might leave inspired to take up a sporting challenge.
The basics
The Melbourne Cricket Ground is not hard to find in Melbourne since it’s one of the most famous spots in the city. Tours of the Australian Sports Museum often include a tour of the MCG, and you can go either on a tour to meet some like-minded sports fans or go solo. Tours often include trips to other sporting venues, like Albert Park F1 Circuit, Flemington Racecourse, the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village, and more to round out your Aussie sports tour.
Things to know before you go
The weather in Melbourne can change abruptly, so bring a jacket, sweater, and maybe a raincoat.
Some tours include lunch and hotel transport, making the day out run smoothly.
Melbourne also has excellent public transport, including the tram, so if you decide to forge out solo, you have a few transport options.
How to get there
Two train lines run to the MCg, the Hurstbridge or Epping lines. Look for the Jolimont exit. From here, you can walk around five minutes through Yarra Park to get to the grounds. Another option is the tram. Hop on number 70 along Flinders Street and then hop off at the MCG stop.
When to get there
The Australian Sports Museum is open daily from around 10am to 5pm, but hours vary, and it can be closed to the public if special events are happening, so check the website or with your tour operator. Melbourne is generally warmer in the summertime, but any time of year works for visiting the museum—just bring proper clothing.
Don’t forget lunch
Melbourne is known for its foodie scene, so factor in good eating in your daily itineraries to the city. Cuisines from around the world dot the streets, like Brunswick Street or Sydney Road. There are plenty of spots to eat near the MCG, but public transport makes it easy to hit up one of the city’s other culinary destinations.
