Asa Packer Mansion Museum
Packer Hill Avenue, Jim Thorpe, PA
One of the grandest historic homes in Pennsylvania’s Poconos region, the Asa Packer Mansion Museum was built by the eponymous former railway magnate, philanthropist, and founder of Lehigh University. Constructed more than 160 years ago in the Victorian Italianate style, it boasts exceptional period interiors and splendid hilltop views overlooking the quaint town of Jim Thorpe and the Lehigh River.
A registered National Historic Landmark, the Asa Packer Mansion Museum—instantly recognizable for its red cupola and hilltop vantage point—is one of Jim Thorpe’s key attractions, and a must-visit for architecture lovers and history buffs in the Poconos.
All visits to the landmark are conducted via docent-led tours, which depart regularly during opening hours. On a tour, you can learn about the history of the esteemed Packer family, explore the highlights of the three-story mansion, and view the lavish period interiors left largely unchanged since the Packers resided in the home. It’s also worth strolling the grounds, which offer panoramic views.
Tickets to the manor are sold on-site on a first-come, first-served basis.
Seniors, students, and children receive discounted entry, though tours are not recommended for very young children.
The steep entry to the mansion and its period interiors make access for wheelchair users limited.
Food and beverages, strollers, and large bags are all prohibited inside the museum.
There is one public restroom located on-site.
Taking photos and videos is not allowed, and all electronics should be turned off.
The Asa Packer Mansion Museum is on Packer Hill Avenue in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. The mansion is some 82 miles (132 kilometers) north of Philadelphia; take 1-476 N. Bus services also connect Jim Thorpe with area towns, as well as cities like Newark and New York.
The Asa Packer Mansion Museum is open seasonally. During its June–October high season, the manor is open every day except Tuesdays, from late morning to mid-afternoon. It’s open weekends only in November, early December, April, and May, and is closed annually from the third week of December through March.
Named after athlete Jim Thorpe, an Olympic gold-medalist and member of the Indigenous Sac and Fox Nation, this historic town in the Poconos offers a wealth of landmarks and natural attractions. One must-do is the historic Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, which immerses visitors in the scenery of the Lehigh Gorge State Park. History lovers can also drop by the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s past, and discover the Old Jail Museum.
