Aquinnah Cliffs

31 Aquinnah Cir., Aquinnah, MA

The pastel-hued Aquinnah Cliffs—also known as Gay Head Cliffs—line the westernmost tip of Martha’s Vineyard and are one of the most scenic spots on the island. Visit the overlook by land to enjoy views of the coastline and the historic Gay Head Light lighthouse or set sail around the island to marvel at the cliffs from the water.

The multicolored Aquinnah Cliffs form a dramatic border between the cobalt waves and emerald hills of Aquinnah on the southwestern corner of Martha’s Vineyard. Most island tours by land make the trip to this outpost for its unparalleled views from the overlook and 19th-century lighthouse. Otherwise, you can cruise past the cliffs on a sailboat cruise from the Vineyard Haven harbor that circles the island to take in its top landmarks from the water.

  • The Aquinnah Cliffs scenic overlook is one of the most panoramic points on Martha’s Vineyard and ideal for souvenir photos.

  • Visitors are not allowed to access the beach or mud pools below the cliffs, but can visit the nearby lighthouse, gift shop, and cultural center. There are walking trails along the top of the cliffs, but trail closures due to erosion are common.

  • The nearby Moshup Beach is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing, but take note that it’s a “clothing optional” stretch of coastline.

  • Boardwalk ramps lead to the overlook and are easy to navigate with a wheelchair or stroller.

The cliffs sit off of State Road and can be reached by VTA bus 5, rental car, or with an island driving tour. (There is ample parking at the lookout point.) Aquinnah is also a popular destination for bike tours and day cruises from the main town of Tisbury and Vineyard Haven harbor.

To get the clearest views of the cliffs from the scenic overlook, visit in the morning before the fog rolls in—along with the crowds. On clear afternoons, make your way to Aquinnah to catch the cliffs at sunset when their color variations are at their most vibrant.

Gay Head Light is arguably the most scenic lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard and a main draw along the Aquinnah coastline. The 19th-century building was moved 150 feet (45 meters) in 2015 to avoid its collapse due to coastal erosion and today visitors can tour the historic landmark daily in July and August. During those months, the lighthouse also holds two evening openings a week for one of the most dazzling sunset perches on the island.
