Annonciade Museum (Musée de l'Annonciade)

2 Place Georges Clemenceau, Saint-Tropez, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, 83990

For avant-garde art in a historic waterfront setting, the Annonciade Museum in St-Tropez is the place to be. This small chapel-turned-gallery boasts an impressive collection of impressionist and expressionist paintings and sculptures, all linked to St-Tropez and its Cote d’Azur surrounds. Works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Paul Signac, and Georges Seurat are among the star finds.

The basics

The museum is a few steps from the bustling Old Port in St-Tropez and often features as a pass-by stop on walking tours or shore excursions. Independent drop-in visits are easy. Collections of art from the 19th and 20th centuries are spread over the two floors of the 16th-century chapel building, with both permanent and temporary exhibitions. There’s a small on-site shop selling art books and St-Tropez postcards, too.

Things to know before you go

  • The Annonciade Museum is a must for modern art aficionados, with works on the pointillist, nabis, and fauve movements.

  • Reasonably priced entry can be purchased at the door, making it ideal for travelers on a budget, and tickets allow for two admissions on the same day.

  • Plan for a visit of one to two hours, depending on your love of art.

  • The Annonciade Museum is air-conditioned and makes a good stop to break up sightseeing on a hot day.

How to get there

The Annonciade Museum is by the waterfront in the old town of St-Tropez, roughly between the post office and the Old Port. It’s easy to reach on foot from anywhere in town. If you’re entering St-Tropez by public bus, get off at the Place des Lices, then stroll for about 10 minutes towards the port to reach the museum.

When to get there

The site is open year-round, from mid-morning to early evening. In the quieter months between October and June, the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday; while in the high summer months from July to September, the museum is open daily. Lovers of late museum trips should go on a Monday in high season when the doors stay open until 9pm. On French public holidays, the museum is closed.

Pointillism at the Annonciade Museum

The technique of painting with specks of color is known as pointillism, and you'll find plenty of these works on display at the Annonciade Museum. Art by pointillist pioneers who lived in St-Tropez, such as Paul Signac, is given pride of place in the galleries, offering colorful glimpses of the coastal town before it found its fame.
