Anadolu Kavagi

Anadolu Kavagi, Istanbul, Turkey, 34825

One of the last Istanbul stops on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, Anadolu Kavagi is a former Black Sea fishing village that retains its quiet charm. It’s known for the ruins of Yoros Castle, a medieval fortress that towers over the neighborhood. Dotted with fish restaurants, Anadolu Kavagi makes for a calm escape from the central city bustle.

The basics

Accessible by ferry, Anadolu Kavagi is a popular place to find a pocket of quiet away from Istanbul’s urban sprawl. Though it is part of the city, the neighborhood stays true to its fishing-village roots. Much of the land remains lush and green on account of its protected status. The grave of Joshua the Prophet is on nearby Yusa Hill.

Many private and small-group tours visit Anadolu Kavagi as part of a Bosphorus sightseeing cruise and also stop by Rumeli Fortress, Galata Tower, Kucuksu Palace, and Dolmabahce Palace, among other sights.

Things to know before you go

*The easiest way to reach Anadolu Kavagi is by boat, though it is also accessible by land. *There are beaches for swimming, so bring a swimsuit if you want to take a dip. *Barbecuing is forbidden at Anadolu Kavagi to protect the 700-year-old trees. *Wear comfortable shoes to walk to the castle.

How to get there

Anadolu Kavagi is easily accessible from the water by ferry. Public Bosphorus cruises depart from the Eminonu ferry pier and stop at Anadolu Kavagi. You can also reach the neighborhood by land with buses and taxis. Alternatively, skip the hassle of arranging your own transportation with an Istanbul tour that includes round-trip transport.

When to get there

Anadolu Kavagi is a popular weekend destination and can also get busy in the afternoons, so arrive early in the day to beat the crowds. There are many fish restaurants here for afternoon and evening meals. If you are traveling by ferry, make sure to consult the ferry timetable so you can return from the neighborhood easily.

The Bosphorus Fortresses

If you choose to travel to Anadolu Kavagi by ferry, you will see many ancient fortresses that dot the Bosphorus. Look out for Rumeli Hisari at the midpoint of the Bosphorus, on one of its narrowest sections. Across the water is Anadolu Hisari, its Anatolian counterpart. Across from Anadolu Kavagi on the European shore is Rumeli Kavagi, situated not far from the lighthouse at Rumeli Feneri.
