POINT OF INTEREST

A’dam Lookout

Overhoeksplein 5, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1031 KS

Twenty-two floors above ground, the A'dam Lookout observation deck offers 360-degree views of Amsterdam. See the city’s historic center, its canals—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—vibrant port, and unique polder landscape, low-lying land that was reclaimed from the sea by the rerouting of water through the canals.

The Basics

Inside A'dam Tower, A’Dam Lookout’s sky deck and indoor panorama deck allow visitors to view the city from all angles no matter the weather conditions, and state-of-the-art interactive exhibits give further insight into Amsterdam's history and culture. Inside the tower is a gift shop, rooftop bar and club (on the 21st floor), and a 20th-floor restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows. Although the tower may look new, it first opened in 1971 in the former Royal Dutch Shell oil company’s offices before undergoing a complete refurbishment in 2016.

Advance packages purchased online include fast-track access, which means no waiting in line. You can save money by booking a combination tour that includes a visit to A’dam Lookout along with another sightseeing activity, such as a canal cruise, excursion to Keukenhof Gardens, or visit to the windmills of Zaanse Schans.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A'dam Tower is a must-visit for photographers and sightseers.

  • Before you get in the elevator, you can have a green-screen photograph taken that depicts you balancing high above Amsterdam. The cost is included in some packages.

  • The tower is wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There

A’dam Tower is right next to the Eye Film Institute and opposite Amsterdam Centraal train station. You can take the free ferry (to Buiksloterweg) from behind the station, followed by a short walk along the IJ-Zijde. If you are cycling, you can park your bicycle at Centraal station.

When to Get There

A'dam Lookout is open daily from 10am to 10pm, with the last entrance at 9pm. However, you are welcome to stay longer in restaurant Madam for a drink. For photographers, the best time to visit is dusk, when the setting sun casts a warm glow over the city skyline.

Over the Edge

If you are not afraid of heights, check out Over the Edge, a large swing that sends thrill-seekers careening back and forth over the top edge (thankfully, while strapped into a full-body harness). The swing requires a separate ticket at an additional cost.
