This historic fort between Savannah and Tybee Island is named after Revolutionary War Gen. Kazimierz (Casimir) Pulaski, who died after the siege of Savannah. It was held by Union soldiers during the American Civil War.

Kids can sign up to be a Junior Ranger or Junior Civil War Historian to deepen their knowledge of the landmark, which is located between the city of Savannah and Tybee Island. To make this site extra affordable, visit on a fee-free day, such as Veterans Day or the National Monument's Birthday on Oct. 15. Just a short hop from Savannah's Historic District, discover a garden oasis packed with roses, herbs, perennial plants and seasonal blooms. Enjoy a nature walk, an archaeological exhibit or the historic 1840s Reinhard House. The site, managed by the Savannah Area Council of Garden Clubs, Inc., was created in the late '80s as a volunteer project and also features an amphitheater and pond. You can freely explore the public areas, though groups of 10 or more may incur a small fee.

Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

Numerous animals call this place home. For an overview, start at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, where you can watch an introductory video and explore exhibits. Then prepare for some wildlife sightings along the 4-mile Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive. Other highlights include ranger programs and a geocache trail — aka an exciting digital treasure hunt using GPS coordinates to find hidden containers or "geocaches." It's a fantastic way to have a hand-on experience at the refuge, combining technology, exploration and fun for all ages!

Nearby Savannah beaches — fun for all ages — are only a short drive away. South Beach, where you’ll find the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, is a family-friendly choice just off U.S. 80. Another popular one—complete with a scenic lighthouse — is North Beach. Other quieter sites with fewer facilities and no lifeguards, such as Tybee Back River Beach, may be better suited for older children who can swim well.
