Charlotte Travel Guide 2025

Updated: February 03, 2025

Written byAAA Travel Editorial Team

Whether you're planning a family vacation, a solo adventure or a romantic getaway, Charlotte is an excellent destination for any type of trip. Located in North Carolina's Piedmont region, the city sits between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the Atlantic Coast to the east. While it doesn’t feature towering peaks or sandy beaches, Charlotte offers a wealth of attractions, including thrilling amusement park rides, lively festivals, upscale art museums and exceptional dining experiences.

At AAA, we understand why this central North Carolina city is such a popular destination for vacationers. With decades of experience assisting travelers, we’ve created this guide to Charlotte to help you plan a memorable trip. From family vacations to romantic getaways and beyond, here’s a closer look at what makes Charlotte a top choice for visitors.

How to Get Around Charlotte

Whether you’re driving to Charlotte or catching a flight, getting to the Queen City is straightforward. Once you arrive, planning how to get around is just as important. Driving your own car or a rental is a convenient way to navigate Uptown and the surrounding areas, especially if you plan to visit the suburbs.

As with any major city, it’s helpful to be aware of traffic patterns and parking options. For those who prefer alternative transportation, Charlotte offers convenient options such as buses and a light rail system. In this guide, we’ll explore the various transportation choices available and what to expect from each.

What to Expect When Driving Around Charlotte?

Charlotte may not be as large as NYC or LA, but it has its share of traffic, mostly during morning and evening rush hour. For main roads, you’ll most likely be taking the following:

  • I-77 for north-south
  • I-485 that loops around the city
  • I-85 for the airport and uptown areas
  • I-277 that loops around Uptown

Note that I-77 has tolls, so plan accordingly. You may want to take alternative routes without tolls.

Where to Park in Charlotte?

You’ll find a lot of streets in and around uptown with metered parking. The rates for these spots vary by location. Other parking options in Charlotte include the following:

  • Parking garages and lots in uptown
  • Park-and-ride lots for catching the LYNX Blue Line

If you’re looking to save money, park-and-ride lots have free parking. If you use a parking lot or garage in uptown, you’ll be paying to park. Rates for these vary based on location, time and other factors.

What Other Transportation Options Does Charlotte Have?

Depending on when you visit and where you’re going, you might decide to walk in order to get around. However, it’s not always easy to rely on this for your entire trip. These are some of the options Charlotte offers:

  • Bike-share programs
  • Electric scooter rentals
  • LYNX Blue Line light rail
  • CATS Buses

You can rent a scooter or bike to ride around Charlotte on your own. Or you can rely on the city’s public transportation options. The light rail runs from UNC Charlotte all the way down to Pineville in south Charlotte or you can catch a ride on the LYNX to several areas including South End and NoDa.

CATS buses are another option but they’re not as convenient as the light rail. Several routes are available if you do want to explore this way of getting around. Before taking either one, check LYNX schedules and routes and CATS bus schedules and routes.

Best Time to Visit Charlotte

Charlotte is a beautiful city in any season, so deciding when to visit depends on the kind of temperatures and weather you like, as well as any events you plan to attend.

If you prefer to avoid heat and humidity

Summer can have sweltering temperatures in Charlotte. For those looking to stay cool, it might be better to plan on visiting in other seasons. Charlotte’s fall temperatures range from the mid-60s to mid-70s F, cooling to the 50s later in the season. Winters are mild, with daytime highs in the upper 40s to mid-50s and occasional dips into the 30s at night.

For those planning a budget-friendly trip

Visiting Charlotte in the winter is usually when you’ll find the lowest rates for hotels and other expenses, although some attractions, like Carowinds, aren’t open in winter. Others might have limited hours.

If you’re looking for fun local events

In Spring the city offers the Charlotte Wine and Food Festival and Coca-Cola 600. During fall you can attend Charlotte Craft Beer Week. Summer events include the Queen’s Feast Charlotte Restaurant Week and Taste of Charlotte, however this is also when the city is hot, crowded and more expensive.
