Modern Athens
At the top of Syntagma Square is the Greek Parliament Building. Walk to the left of this up Vasilissis Sofias. On your left is the Benaki Museum and the sign for the Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art. On the right are the Byzantine and War Museums. Opposite the entrance to the Hilton Hotel, turn left up Gennadiou to the Gennadios Library. The Library is mainly of interest to bibliophiles and admirers of Lord Byron. From the bottom of Gennadiou, walk back towards Syntagma slightly to cross the junction. Walk diagonally down Vasilissis Konstantinou. On the far side of the road is the National Gallery, whose collection includes modern Greek art. Continuing down Vasilissis Konstantinou look for the right-hand turning down Vasilissis Giorgiou, which brings you out on Attikou with the Presidential Palace on your left. Turn left round the front of the Palace to see the royal Guards in their traditional uniforms. Continue down this street and the splendid Olympic Stadium appears on your left. Walk around the stadium - or even jog as Athenians do. Cross the road opposite the entrance and veer to the left through the edge of the National Gardens. On your right is the Zappeion, used for conferences. Walk to the left of the Zappeion, turn left and then right, through a small gate to explore more of the National Gardens. The main road on your far left is Amalias. Return to this when ready and turn right to Syntagma.
