The Ancient Greeks thought that Delphi was the centre of the world, and when you drive to it through the Parnassos Mountains, you may understand why.

From central Athens look for signs to Lamia, Thessaloniki and the E75 National Highway.

Thessaloniki, Greece's second city, is well worth a visit for its Roman remains, museums, Macedonian culture and lively sea-front eating places.

Stay on the E75 for about 85km until you reach the turn-off for Thíva (Thebes) which you take.

The name of Thebes resonates with history, but the present-day town is mainly notable for its excellent museum.

As you skirt around Thebes, follow the road signs for Leivádia, which is about another 50km further on from Thebes.

Leivádia is a far more attractive place to stop than Thebes, with some ancient remains and a lovely setting on the banks of the River Herkina.

Whether you divert into Leivádia or not, you will now pick up the signs for Delphi, as the road climbs up into the mountains.

One diversion you must make if time allows is to take the left turn to Dístomo, some 20km after Leivádia. Beyond Dístomo is the remote Monastery of Ossios Loukas, one of the finest in all Greece and renowned for its frescoes.

Continuing past the Distomo turning, this main road leads you all the way to Delphi, first passing through the delightful mountain town of Aráchova.

Stop off in Aráchova for lunch and a walk round, before proceeding the last few kilometres to Delphi.
