Byzantine Churches of Athens
Starting in Mitrópolis Square, walk up the street left of the main cathedral. On your right is the 16th-century chapel of Ágia Dynamis. Go up to Syntagma Square and turn right along Filellinon. The tower of the Church of St Nikodimos is visible. To visit this Byzantine church, cross over the busy road. Further along is the Church of St Paul. Cross back over Filellinon and look for the Museum of Greek Folk Art sign. Follow this down Kydathinaíon. On your right is the 12th-century Byzantine church dedicated to the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. Further down Kydathinaíon is a small square surrounded by cafés. Cross this diagonally to the far right corner and walk down the short street. Reach the 11th-century Church of St Catherine. Past the church, turn right up Adrianou, then first left, climbing to the T-junction. Turn right. This is Anafiótika, the area below the Acropolis. Follow the narrow street and the signs for the Acropolis, past the Church of St George on the Rocks and the 1774 Church of Ágios Simeon. This brings you to the site of the first university of the independent Greek state. It is now a small museum. Turn right after the university down Klepsithras to the Roman Agora. Skirt right then left around the Agora, right down Eolou and right again up the pedestrianised Ermou. Ahead is the Kapnikaréa, yet another of the many ancient churches that survive in the centre of Athens. Pass Kapnikaréa and take the first right to return to Mitrópolis.
