Around the Acropolis
Beginning in Monastiráki Square, walk up Areos towards the Acropolis. On your left is the mosque housing the Ceramic Collection of the Museum of Greek Folk Art, which is well worth a visit. Just beyond are the remains of the Library of Hadrian. At the end of Areos, turn left and then right, up Dioskoron. If in doubt at any time, walk up! At the end of Dioskoron, climb the steps which zigzag towards the Acropolis, sometimes so narrow that they seem to disappear. On your right is the Agora. The temple you can see is the Theseion, which gives its name to the area around it. Further on is the Areopagos, and opposite on your left the entrance to the Acropolis. If visiting the Acropolis, turn left as you leave it to walk down the steps up which the majority of tourists climb. At the bottom, as you turn left along Areopagitou, you will pass the lines of parked tourist buses. On your left stands the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. To visit this theatre take the path off to the left. Otherwise, continue along the road which then passes the entrance to the Theatre of Dionysos. Across the road on your right is the Acropolis Study Centre, still being developed and therefore looking like a building site. If you wish to visit it, cross at the first traffic-lights and the entrance is down Makriyanni. If not, turn left at the lights, along Vyronos (Byron Street) and up to the Plateía Lysikrátous for a restful break.
