Spend a day touring Attikí (Attica).

Take Syngrou Avenue to Piraeus and follow the coast road south past the old international airport towards Cape Sounion. It quickly becomes a delightful drive along the coast of the Saronic Gulf.

The Temple of Poseidon is unmistakable on its headland,at the southern tip of Attica. There are hotels here for those wanting to break the journey.

Continue north from Soúnio on the main road towards Markópoulo.

Markópoulo is a pleasant place to pause. There are cafés and, in a walled garden, two chapels worth seeing: Ágia Paraskevi and Ágia Thekla.

In Markópoulo leave the main road to Athens, and take the smaller road towards Pórto Ráfti.

Pórto Ráfti is an attractive beach resort and small port, set in a large bay: a good spot for a meal of fresh fish.

From Pórto Ráfti take the coast road to Vravróna, looking for signs for the site and museum of ancient Vravróna (Brauron). From Vavróna keep on the coast road into Rafína, another lively port resort. Leave Rafína on the Athens road (54) but turn right towards Néa Mákri and Marathonas (route 83).

The memorial mound at Marathónas (Marathon) is on the right, after Néa Mákri. Here 10,000 Athenians defeated 30,000 invading Persians. The 192 Athenian casualties are buried beneath the mound.

Continue towards Marathon but before reaching it look for the right turn to Ágia Marina and Rámnoús.

The remote site at Rámnoús is at the very end of the road, short on ruins but full of atmosphere. A world away from the bustle of the capital.
