Texas State Capitol
1100 Congress Ave., Austin, TX, 78701
Texas State Capitol is on Congress Ave. at 11th St. Completed in 1888, the Renaissance Revival-style Capitol is clad in Texas “sunset red” granite and features an impressive dome crowned by “Goddess of Liberty,” a nearly 16-foot-tall statue of a woman holding up a gilded five-pointed star. Several monuments and statues are scattered throughout the Capitol's extensive park-like grounds. Daily guided building tours depart from the south entrance foyer and cover architecture, art, state history and the Texas legislature. On guided or self-guiding tours, visitors will see the Capitol's impressive rotunda and both the House and Senate chambers on the second floor. When the legislature is in session (in odd-numbered years), access to the floor of the chambers may be restricted; a third-floor chamber gallery is open to visitors during proceedings. On the southeast corner of the grounds, at 112 E. 11th St., is a three-story castle-like structure containing the Capitol Visitors Center. This restored 1857 General Land Office Building is the oldest state office building in Texas. Here visitors can get a sense of Texas history through videos and interactive exhibits. Maps and visitor information also is available. Special themed tours are available throughout the year. Note: All visitors to the Capitol must pass through metal detectors. Guided tours are available. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
