The High Street Historic District, downtown, extends west from the Choptank River. The buildings in this area date from the mid-1700s and exhibit a variety of architectural styles. A replica of the Choptank River Lighthouse stands on the waterfront at the junction of Water and High streets.
In 2013 the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument was established to recognize the life of Harriet Tubman, a conductor on the Underground Railroad. A 17-acre state park has been developed adjacent to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on SR 335 that includes a visitor center with an orientation video, interpretive exhibits, a research library, a memorial garden, picnic tables and walking trails.
