Orchard and truck crops flourish using water diverted from the Gunnison River; the lower portal of the diversion tunnel is 7.5 miles east of Montrose off US 50. The city is headquarters for the power operations segment of the Colorado River storage project.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is northeast via US 50 and SR 347. In addition to opportunities for a variety of recreational pursuits, the Curecanti National Recreation Area and the Grand Mesa-Uncompahgre-Gunnison National Forests offer beautiful scenery.
Montrose is the western terminus of a scenic stretch of US 50 extending 126 miles from Poncha Springs; it also is the northern end of scenic US 550, which includes the Million Dollar Highway , from Durango.
