The town, nestled in the valley at the mouth of Big Thompson Canyon, was named for W.A.H. Loveland, who supervised the building of the Colorado Central Railroad through the valley in 1877. Many who did not strike it rich in the gold fields struck it rich selling vegetables grown in this fertile area. Rocky Mountain National Park is 30 miles west of Loveland.
Several lakes and reservoirs offer water sports. Golf, hiking, bicycling, camping and horseback riding also are popular pastimes. Boyd Lake State Recreation Area is 2 miles east.
