DRIVING Speed limit on motorways: 120kph Speed limit outside built-up areas: 80kph Speed limit in built-up areas: 50kph Seat belts must be worn in front seats at all times and in rear seats where fitted. Children under 10 are not allowed in front seats. 80 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath is a criminal offence, and from 50-80 micrograms a civil offence. Penalties are severe. Petrol (venzini) usually comes in five grades: super (sooper), regular (apli), unleaded (amolyvdhi), super unleaded (sooper amolyvdhi) and diesel (petrelaio). Petrol stations are normally open 7-7 (closed Sun) though larger ones open 24 hours. Most take credit cards. There are few stations in remote areas. If you break down driving your own car then the Automobile and Touring Club of Greece (ELPA) (Phone: 779-1615) provide 24-hour road assistance (Phone: 104). If the car is hired, follow the instructions given in the documentation; most of the international rental firms provide a rescue service. |
